Rolling Down
the Avenue
Using the music of Indiana jazz saxophone great Alonzo "Pookie" Johnson (1927-2005) as a backdrop, master storyteller Deborah Asante brings to life the compelling story of Ruby Walker and her friends coming of age in Indianapolis in the 1940's. Through the eyes of these fictitious children, this dramatic and humorous story examines what it was like to live on Indiana Avenue in Lockfield Gardens during the first jazz heyday in Indianapolis. Deborah once had the honor of performing this story for Pookie himself. This program can also be scheduled as a 3-artist program with the live music of vocalist Everett Greene and pianist Marvin Chandler. Contact Young Audiences for details.
